Like all gilled fungi, you first need to know the spore colour. Getting a spore print off a specimen this small is difficult. With small fungi the best way is to cut off the cap, place it on a glass slide and put a drop of water on the cap to keep it moist then cover to prevent it drying out. However, this is a very small specimen! In this case you can safely go by the colour of the gills: so it has white spores. It is one of a number of small white fungi in the Genus Hemimycena. Although only about 15 species, they look very similar and so a microscope is needed to distinguish them. However, given the time of year & growth on/under bark, from experience this may well be Hemimycena tortuosa. The name comes from the corkscrew-shaped hairs on the cap and stem (which easily identify this species under the microscope).

Nice image Graham! I've only seen them in liquid mounts on slides, not under low power.
