Droppings on Track by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr These were in the middle of the track leading up through our woodland (beech, as you see, and pine). I have never seen droppings like this up there before, and the only large mammals I have seen (the droppings were about 2cm across) are roe and fallow deer, which these are obviously not. I have not even seen any domestic dogs going up there as it is private land. I could not detect any odour from these, and they felt quite hard when prodded. I couldn't see any bones, wing cases etc. Suggestions (not on a postcard) please!

I was thinking badger or maybe fox. badger the more likely and it does depend on what they have been eating.

Fox...........but a big one.
Badger tend to dig a scrape to poo in.(and it doesn't look like that anyway.)

Dave – thanks for your tip, though in fact I had already consulted that very guide, which I had copied from the magazine, and I still couldn't make up my mind. Notpop – fox droppings I've seen before have had twisted ends and also although I put my nose right down to it (as one has to, in the interests of science) I couldn't detect a smell; however, that doesn't in fact rule out fox, though I have never seen one around here at all. NellyDee – interestingly this piece of woodland is actually called 'Badgers Mount'; however, in 14 years I have never seen any badger trails or any other droppings like these, though there are some large tunnel entrances that I had always put down as belonging to energetic rabbits. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled now, because clearly some animal is hanging about that I didn't know was there. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Sounds like its time for a post-Christmas present, Faith - a trail camera.
