Can't see any prints in the spoil heap but there has to be some. Also there will be a hair or two on roots and such. Holes are narrow/tall indicating fox,whereas badger holes usually low/wide

Thank you for your observation Notpop.
There aren't any paw prints or scratch marks in the spoil as it has been raining so heavily they've been washed away.
I also looked for hair but was unable to find any. If there was some about maybe the rain washed them away as well.
I take your point about the shape of the hole. Something I should have considered myself. It is probably a fox hard at work.

I have not seen a badger sett, other than on TV, but this hole is not, as Notpop has said, as wide as I would have thought a sett entrance would be. However if it is a fox I'd be surprised that your friend has not noticed it - in our garden they scent frequently.
