Hard to be sure on that photo, but I think it is Chicory - colour right, buds on stems, but shape not right but probably because it is so end of season.

Definitely chicory, I would say, with the ridged stem, bristles etc, shape of the buds as Hobjob says, nothing else quite like that.

Hi
I was Gloucestershire borne, Gloucestershire bred, strong in the arm thick in the head but now live near the Med, was this find near Frampton on Severn I ask because it was the one place I ever saw it in the UK

It is a very common plant in the southern half of Britain, much less common as you go northwards. It would be a native where you are now, Steve, but in Britain it is basically a relic of cultivation, and thought to be declining, as it is less cultivated now. That said, I have seen whole fields devoted to it here in Perthshire, so someone is still growing it for something. It is classed as an archeophyte, which is to say it is not native (= here since the end of the last Ice Age) but introduced before 1500, so an honorary native if you like. (I like your rhyme, by the way.)

It wasn't far for Frampton, just a little south of Severn Beach Only the one small clump of about 4 flowers there though. Maybe seeds dropped by a bird? Nige
