Males occasionally croak during the autumn, they are actually almost sexually active at this time of year prior to hibernation ready for when they awaken. The cold usually results in the metabolism lowering which halts the hormones. In parts of south west Britain you may even start getting spawn at the end of next month.

Thanks for the info, Dogghound- I didn't realise that! I hope we don't get any spawn in our pond the autumn... I think we might be getting snow flurries this weekend.

The females won't become sexually active until it starts warming up so will be fine. Even when they are back at the pond in the spring the females decide when to spawn not the males, so the condition and behaviour of the males is irrelevant to spawning in this respect.
