I think this is either a badger or fox, a young animal maybe? Rather a coincidence that I should find this after all the dead mice/ shrews I found back in the summer, what do you think could there be a connection? carcass by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I tried to have a look at it with the skull the right way up, (put the image into Photoshop and reversed it) and then compared it to fox and badger skulls online. I think, (and this is just an amatuer guess!) but from these two: Red fox c2.staticflickr.com/8/7155/6454714643_abf6fba384_b.jpgand a badger- www.skullsite.co.uk/badger/badger_jaw_800.jpgI am thinking yours is a fox... the fox has more pointed and tearing molars towards the back of the lower jaw, while the badger's is more elongated and grinding, (more similar to a horse's, which is the animal skull I'm the most familiar with!)

Thank You Dan for your answer, and much appreciated Rowanberry for the links and detective work.

We had something a bit odd around June time here, 2 dead cats within a week of each other and a number of dogs seriously ill with what our local vet suggested may be from poisoning. Locals have speculated (and from what I understand that is all it is) that our local wood was the target for raptor poisoning, scary really. Shirl

I hope there is not a connection either Shirl but I did find a poisoned red kite here albeit a few years ago now, whether it was poisoned by bait deliberately left for raptors or secondary rodenticide poisoning I know not.

The skeleton looks quite a bit different now after just a few days, and as you can see something as taking a macabre interest, just a little rearranged would you not say! Skeleton by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr Alan still reviewing the situation
