Thought I would start a deer thread for any cervine pics you may have. This camera has an elder which the local roe have adopted as an anointing post. Every deer which arrives in shot makes straight for a sniff at the post to see who has been past. They then add their own scent from their forehead glands or sometimes their hock glands.

The site of this camera is in a deep tangle of windblown Scots Pine, which makes changing the card a challenge but allows wildlife to feel safe and act naturally. Roe normally rest with legs tucked under to allow a quick getaway However I have never seen one stretched out like this, showing just how relaxed they feel with a secure site

Does anyone have any idea how long roe will continue to suckle ? This was in late September.

Does anyone know about the leather "buttons" on the foreheads of roebuck kids ? Do they exist or do I just imagine I read about them ! Do they cast before the kid starts growing its first crown in velvet in Autumn ? Or are they retained during winter as the tips of the first velvet crown ?

Excellent shots from your camera, Notpop.
I'd not heard of the 'buttons' before. All I can find about them is -
"A male kid develops a small button on his pedicles during his first few months; this will be shed in spring, when he grows his first antlers" - so it appears the first antlers are grown at a different time to those on older stags.

Hi Tringa < That is pretty much in line with what I read, but the fact is roebuck kids grow their first crown during their first winter while adult roebucks are doing the same. I can understand buck kids being born with these 'buttons' where their crowns will eventually grow, but if they are,I have no idea what happens to them. Sadly no roe have their kids in the woods I have my cameras , so I only see kids once their mothers start taking them walkabout,by which time their antlers may be 1-3 cm tall in velvet. These then continue to grow until velvet is shed in Spring to reveal the first, usually two ,three or four point crown. I'm starting to think roe buttons are a fallacy ! Surely they would be better documented if they existed ?

This first photo although completely out of focus inspired a line from one of my poems called seasons – (when winter comes the early morning frost hangs upon the tree like ghosts are lost once again the eerie scene descends on one as in a dream.) One morning in December as I recall I was looking for old Sparrowhawks nests at the time when I first flushed a woodcock followed by this handsome fallow, that morning was very cold indeed but well worth the effort of being out early.
