I have two traps set up for overnight, Mainly catch 'my' badgers and pine martens, though have once caught tawny catching a wood mouse. My favourite was catching my red squirrel Nutty, when I did put one of the cameras out during the day.

Hi Nelly Dee Interested in how sure you are about having one squirrel ? When catching grey squirrels from attics and suchlike, I am often told by people they have one or maybe two. The actual number usually turns out to be several. Must be great having resident Pine Martens. My main camera trap subjects are roe deer, badger, fox and stoat. (minus the hundreds of rabbit stills I have to delete every week) Also of course the cairncam species such as field vole, field mouse, common, pygmy and water shrews and and the odd hopeful weasel. I find the water shrews particularly interesting as that particular cairncam is nowhere near water !

Yes I only have 2 red squirrels, one was a young one which on a couple of occasions appeared with it's mum, but they are territorial little things and I think once it was old enough it's mum sent it packing. It has taken me four years to encourage Nutty as I call her to come to the garden. I am surrounded by mixed woodland and forestry and she is seasonal when appearing. I have special feeding boxes for her, she comes during the winter and stays till her natural food - pine cones and beech masts are in abundance - also mating possibly, then I don't see her again till food is scarce again. We do not have grey and in the strath here very few reds. There are big campaigns in various areas around Scotland to "Save our red squirrels".

Amazing action to catch!
What sort of camera do you use, and does it automatically use flash when needed? Many thanks.
It might be best to reply on a new techy thread in the Camera trap forum if that is not a problem to you. Rather than clutter this thread up with technical speak.
Cheers,
Bryan

I really must get into this camera-trap thing when I find out how. I know there is a pine marten about here somewhere, but I have never seen it in spite of all the jammy pieces I have left out. With squirrels admittedly I don't need one – I have three young reds at the moment (the most I ever saw in my garden at one go was eight, a few years ago) and they are so tame I can film them as close as a metre away. I could put a video on here . . . if I knew how to do that! As you see, I am not very techy.
