Early this morning I took this - moon badly over exposed unfortunately but I'm thinking I've got (moving away from the moon) Venus, Mars, Jupiter and perhaps the star Regulus near Venus. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks Alf

Yes you are correct, Alf. Just like to say I am no great astronomer but I do have a copy of the free Stellarium www.stellarium.org/en_GB/which shows the moon, planets and Regulus just as you have captured them. Dave

I saw a similar shot of the moon early on this morning with Venus clearly visible, but the moon was a crescent here, still a lovely sight though

I too saw the crescent moon this morning; I wish I had tried to get a shot, as it was great.
I think the slightly odd appearance of the moon in Alf's shot is due to it being, as he says, overexposed. The moon, even as a crescent, is so much brighter than the planets that a shot to record the planets will, unfortunately, overexpose the moon and it ends up looking different to reality.
However, Alf's shot is a good record of a conjunction of planets.

Your right Dave - tried to get moon exposed correctly but planets virtually disappeared. I'm sure a more skilled/knowledgeable photographer would get the shot right - if I'd thought about it I should have taken two shots at different exposures and edited them together but at 05.30 that morning there was more than just my brain frozen! Thanks for the link. Alf
