This Angle Shades was clinging (but only just) to the wall at first light this morning. Didn't know what it was at first with its wings in the position shown left. An hour or so later it was in a more recognisable position but seems to have an orange coloured bead on its back. Wonder if this is an injury or is this some phenomena I just haven't seen before.
Thanks Alf

This moth appears to have recently emerged from the pupa, probably underground. They crawl out and seek a high place to dry their wings out before taking first flight. It is characteristic for moths and butterflies to hold their wings straight behind the back at this time of their life cycle.
It comes with the added benefit that you get to see the underside pattern; about 95% of our moths never show it at any other time other than this.
