Fabulous image - time to ditch the camera and get me a new phone! Alf Well Alf I wouldn't. If you need a new phone yeah get one with a good camera but if you need a new camera of any type I would say get one with some manual controls a view finder and the ability to shoot raw files. Raw files are not processed as much by the camera as jpeg's and collect far more information allowing you to process as you like, go a little over the top high dynamic range 'HDR' or perhaps selective colour whatever floats your boat. Take loads of pictures and have fun playing with them, don't forget if your stuck or need help there will always be a you tube video. I use lightroom 5 but there are free utilities out there and of course the makers own. Below is the same picture as it came out of the phone a raw file just converted to jpeg. ian. by IAN ROBINSON, on Flickr

That is interesting Ian. I have only recently had a smartphone (a Moto G4) and I am surprised by the capabilities of the camera. In many conditions it can't hold a candle to my Pentax K5, but given halfway decent light it does a pretty good job and, as often said, the best camera is the one you have is one in your hand.

Love the way the light is angled like a spot light

Yes I kind of liked that too. As the season progresses, don't know how many more decent sunsets we'll see here so went overboard and took two last night! 1 Oct 17 - 01 by Alf Parker, on Flickr 1 Oct 17 - 02 by Alf Parker, on Flickr

Tonight from the road between Gairloch and Poolewe. A calm end to a fairly wild day. Dave

I have seen/experienced much worse (at least this time I wasn't stopped in my tracks by the wind) but it was "lively", though not at the time the forecast suggested - quite quiet during the early hours but mid/late morning it started to wind up.
I was lucky with the shot - right place, right time. Really like your second shot above, Alf. The streaks of red cloud look great.
Little chance of a repetition here tonight, though. At the moment the sky has more tones of pale grey that I imagined were possible but not a hint sunlight.

Thought I might get a good shot of the moon setting and lighting the clouds this morning but a combination of gale blowing, lack of manual focus on my camera and being too lazy to get the tripod out at 05am this was the best I could manage. Moonset - 05am 05 Oct 17 by Alf Parker, on Flickr

Nice, going to try myself if we ever get a clearish sky again.

Nice shot, Alf- I tried just now to take a decent photo but all I got was a big white blur.
Hand-held lunar shots are not my forte!

Took this one this morning of the moon setting over our rooftop. Lovely clear skies at 7:00, but clouded over quickly. Setting Moon Oct2017 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr
