A neighbour's dormer window has been a favoured nest site for a few years. Initially occupied by swallows, in each of the last two years house martins have evicted the original occupants, extended their nest and produce two broods of young. This year seemed set to follow the same pattern but from the outset a male house sparrow has spent most of every day perched on the roof above the nest or a vantage point a few feet away chirping loudly and even entering the nest when the house martins were absent. In the last few days I have not seen the house martins at all but the sparrow was frequently in the nest until yesterday afternoon when it seems the walls came tumbling down!
