Found yesterday on a water vole survey by the River Dove, fresh and quite moist when found and it was on the grass between the river and the footpath. Still there 2 hours later, with a few peck marks by then. The only predator in that section was a Grey Heron, could that have just dropped it and then didn't come back for it, seems a bit of a waste of energy though. No-one fishing there either, so I can't think of anything else but a predator losing a grip on it. Shirl DeadGrayling30_09_2015 by Shirley Freeman, on Flickr

The area of damage that I can see in the pic could be consistent with either a Heron or a Cormorant: I think those are the most likely culprits.
It doesn't take much for either a Heron or Cormorant to be scared off and just move on.
Sometimes,(usually with a larger fish) a Heron will alternatively leave a stab mark on either side of the dorsal fin.

Never seen Cormorants there and the Grey Heron was patrolling it's patch as usual, so Grey Heron I reckon, thanks for the reply
