Hi - I'm a new member who needs urgent advice. We have just found an injured heron in our field. It looks as though part of it's wing tip has been torn off (by a fox? gun? raptor? - I don't know)
Can anybody suggest who I could contact for help? I'm near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Many thanks

Hi Vince - the RSPCA just collected the Heron. There doesn't seem to be any visible signs of injury, so the RSPCA guy thinks the reason it can't fly is because it may be a fledgling. It will be taken to a bird sanctuary in Cheshire tomorrow, but hopefully will be released back into our valley again, so all's well that ends well. Many thanks for your prompt reply this morning, but the Meltham Rescue answer machine says it is closed until the end of October.

It's very unlikely to be a fledgling at this time of year, grey herons are early breeders and have chicks in the nest as early as February. Fledging starts around May. Even broods which are lost then subsequently re-laid wouldn't be this late fledging. Are there any overhead wires which it may have clipped? A more likely possibility than it being a fox. Alternatively it may have either been poisoned or eaten something which has disagreed with it. Birds will often not fly if they have stomach/intestinal problems. Good on you for helping it get rescued. :-)

Yeah the RSPCA don't seem to really have a clue about wildlife. Hopefully they will stick to their word and take it to a sanctuary.
