I've noticed this mayfly here only once before (NE Cumbria). Can anyone confirm its ID? I'm thinking it's a male imago from the Baetidae family. Thanks, Alf unknown mayfly by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Agree with the family and it looks very distinctive too. Not one I am familiar with though unfortunately. Will keep an eye out.

I've found some sites where this is labelled Baetis fuscatus but others where a search for Baetis fuscatus produces very different looking mayflies - it seems to be a tricky area for IDs! Alf

Yes it's not easy. The other problem here is it's exceptionally fresh, so may look slightly darker once it's matured a little.

Try Baetis muticus

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've now found images of very similar mayflies in North America and Europe variously labelled as Baetis fuscatus, Baetis muticus and Baetis niger. I think I'll simply label this one as a Baetid and leave it at that. Hopefully the next lot to emerge will be easier to ID!
