hullo all, The elusive beastie is best seen from above rather than the side. Often described as "horsey" the chalk carving at Uffington needs mental effort to adjust the horns and beard , with comments like "stylised horse " , "it's symbolic". There are pics of horse mustaches, coins with long ears on horses and claims the thick fetlocks on the rear legs are normal.... The coins are from 1st century BC, the Horse is from 1400 - 600 BC. Above St Georges chapel Windsor are various rare beasts and there we find Beaufort yale with goat front body and lion hindquarters. It lived in Etruscan temples at 600 BC (that number again..) and at Babylon as Marduk's horned lion from way back. Mushshushu is how he pronounced it , "fierce snake" which perhaps is seen in the British species with extended neck. "Yale" is from Babylonian I-alu "yale" from the root word *WL "to ascend" , the ibex goat with serious horns like at Uffington.

Hello Alf Thank you. A keen observer of animal species may wonder why the White Horse has a deep cleft straight down from thin spikes on the head. Why the 2 spikes below the jaw? and so on , from head to tail. A rabbit has a shape, and horses. Is the Uffington beast really fit to be a horse deity?
