On my way home, I called in at the Warburg nature reserve. As I expected, it was too early for the Fly or either Butterfly Orchids, but I did see these: Early Purple Orchid Bird's-nest Orchid Apart from the orchids, I had some 'firsts for the year' during my walk, including Wood Speedwell, Sannicle, Goatsbeard and Yellow Pimpernel. Lovely pics, the only orchid I have seen in flower here so far is an Early Purple. Plenty of leaves on Common Spotted, Bee Orchid and Common Twayblade so hopefully won't be long.

Lovely orchids there Pete. How did you work out what the hybrid orchid was?

The Hartslock site is known for these three Orchids, the Lady, Monkey and the hybrid of the two. The hybrid is a much taller and bigger flower than its parents (as is usual with hybrids) and, at least to an amateur like me, it does look like a cross between its two parents (e.g. its 'legs' are part way between the 'legs' of the Monkey Orchid and the 'skirts' of the Lady orchid).
This was the third year in a row I've visited the site to see these orchids - I was inspired to go after reading reports from other WABbers. In fact I'd actually walked past the site, on a path along the Thames, several times before without knowing it was there.

Lovely photos Pete. Yes apparently there is only one Lady now there. A few years since my last visit.

I saw this a few weeks back on the Pembs coast path just to the west of Lydstep. I assume it is OK to add an image here. Not really up on Orchids, but they do look lovely.

The monkey orchids at Hartslock are considerably smaller than those at Parkgate Down in Kent. It's been suggested that this is as a result of 'unnatural selection'. Collectors in the past have only taken the largest specimens, leaving the smaller.
It's believed that the lady's orchid at Hartslock is an introduction. The large hybrids show typical 'hybrid vigour' and there's concern that because of cross fertilisation, the monkey orchids are in danger of losing their purity or being lost entirely.

I went on a 7-8 mile walk in the Oxfordshire part of the Chilterns today, and near the end of it I stopped to visit the Warburg nature reserve again. I saw Fly Orchid, Greater Butterfly Orchid, Lesser Butterfly Orchid, Common Twayblade and Common Spotted Orchid.
