While walking the dog early yesterday morning I heard a call I haven't heard for a number of years. It was the keewik call of a Tawny Owl. I thought it was good as the area is one where many years ago Tawny Owls were common. The only thing that confused me was the time; it was about 7am and obviously light. I had never heard one calling during the daytime but just thought it might mean owls were around again. The time of the call still niggled me a little so I did a bit of research and found jays imitate this call and the area is a dense deciduous, mainly oak, woodland where jays are very common. I had not heard of jays doing this but I think I was misled by a jay Dave

Hi Dave I suspect it could be a territorial thing or a contact call as I have heard tawny owls calling in the daytime on more than one occasion myself, here is one short film clip of one calling in the daytime. Jays are very good at mimicking as you say heard one doing quite a good impression of a buzzard recently too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bBLGlRoWsMAlan

Thanks for the reply (and the link), Alan. Jays are superb birds but they are 10 a penny around here so it would be good if this was an owl. The area was the first place, many years ago, I saw a tawny owl in daylight, roosting in a tree. The whole bird is impressive, but the eyes! It is like looking into the void.
