I'd missed news of this so far, so thanks for posting. Some other interesting events in the night sky in September on the link too.

I was going to post this to ask if this was Venus I could see here this morning (I'm no astronomer!) - thanks to your link Shirl - I now know it is! Alf

A good shot Alf, given that even as a thin cresent the moon is much brighter than a planet and it is very difficult to get detail in the moon and record the planet at the same time.
There is a lot of useful astronomical information on the Web but Stellarium (which is free to download) is really good. It can be tailored to your lat. and long. and can be set to show just about anything in the sky.

Great pic Alf, always lovely to see the planets with a crescent moon

Gorgeous photos, I love clear nights - even managed a tiny glimpse of the Milky Way last night

Well, if the mist holds off tonight, my plan is to get up at 2am and wait for totality to arrive. Quite exciting and it should be a fabulous sight. Fingers crossed for good visibility!

I don't think I'll ever be warm again! But an extraordinary sight in the wee small hours and pleased to have witnessed it. Visibility in this part of Cumbria was excellent and I hope it was for everyone else. Unfortunately the photography was a let down. I'd read that autofocus would not work for this event and sure enough, even with a tripod but a camera that does not allow me to turn autofocus off, all my images are blurred.

I'd like to see any photos of it if anyone has some. Here in NW Scotland the cloud cover was more or less total at about 2:30am. I did glimpse a slightly larger looking moon around 7am but by then the main event was over.

Well at 10:15pm a lovely large very bright but white moon, clearly seen in the sky so got up around 2:15am, misty conditions but the moon was there with the eclipse in progress, not a large moon and it was white although there were hints of pink in the sky to the west. At 3:05 am a few minutes before totality the mist thickened and I saw nothing else except a faint white glow in the mist where the moon probably was. Very disappointing although not unusual for the weather to prevent seeing these wonderful sights in the night sky. That's life and I am still tired from my early morning!

You wanted pics Dave - I'm sure someone has some fantastic ones - I'm a bit embarrassed about these but I guess they give an impression of what we saw. at 01:38 at 02:23 Alf

Hey Alf at least you got it. Prior to going to bed, moon looking enormous over Ben More. Daughter and I set alarms, got up donned coats and boots and out we went - beautiful bright clear skies filled with stars - fantastic! UM where is the moon? Out of sight behind the hill upon which we live, even if we had got the car and driven out the area it would have been over. So here is the bright moon!
