I had these in a trap in April but I can't ID them. I think they may be the same. I first thought they were Noctuidae but i can't see the renifom mark. They look quite distinctive but I can't match to anything in my books. Any help much appreciated. P1030339 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr P1030511 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Don't know what they are, but I'd say they are different species. In the first one the Kidney and Oval seem to merge, which should be a help in identifying them. The second has a long 'dart' mark.
I'll have a look at my moth books when I get home.

I think first is Early Grey (thanks to the Hants Moths Flying Tonight web page, which let's you pick any week and it shows the most common moths in Hants at that time of year). Thought second would be easy to find, but I can't see it in the book.

Thanks Pete. I would never have made the connnection as the colours between the images in my book and what was in my trap are so different. Even with the descriptions of the variations I would have been stumped.
Thanks also for the info about the Hants Moth Flying Tonight web page. I am in East Sussex so I think it will be very useful.

I had the date wrong on the second image. It was in fact taken on 22nd August.

Oops. Posted before I was ready.
I think the second one may be a Shuttle-shaped Dart.

Oops. Posted before I was ready. I think the second one may be a Shuttle-shaped Dart. Wrong shape, colour and markings for that. I'll have a look when I'm in front of my books again Nige
