Inspired by someone on Facebook calling Common Striped Woodlice "grandfathers" as a child, I wonder if other people had pet names for wildlife. Maybe you still use the word. Or maybe you knew an old country name for something. "Piss-a-bed" springs to mind.

I used to call Greater Plantain 'Turtle plant' because I thought the leaves were shaped like a turtle's shell.

We called woodlice baby armadillos We called them slate beetles or slaters for some reason. We called very big earthworms, bloodsuckers. We called dandilions, pee the beds too and sticky willy for that plant that sticks to you (I have no idea what it's called to this day).

Sticky Willy is Common Cleaver and is also known as Goose grass and Velcro weed which is rather an apt name for it.

We sometimes changed it to sticky willow when adults were about, in case we got into trouble for saying willy. Starlings used to be called stuckies around my way, I don't think they get called that now.

We called them slate beetles or slaters for some reason. We always called them Slaters, too. Rude awakening when I found out they were wood lice! Always welcome in my garden no matter what you call them.
