I think this is a Hedge Rustic: Hedge RusticIf it is, it's not too common a find in Hertfordshire apparently.

This actually provoked a very interesting discussion on the Herts Moth Group forum (mainly about why I hadn't kept the moth for further inspection). Two or three people agreed it was Hedge Rustic, but the Herts county recorder, Colin Plant, thought it was a dark form of Straw Underwing - he happened to have Martin Townsend with him (one of the authors of the Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland) who agreed with him. However, I pointed out that the photo showed the moth had feathered antennae (you have to look closely to see this) and this was sufficient to prove it was a male Hedge Rustic.
So it is a good find, the first Hedge Rustic found in Herts for a few years.
