This is indeed a well-known wild flower, but a rather unusual – though quite natural – example of it. Any ideas? double G.riv by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Something I have seen too, but not sure of it's name. A relation of Water Avens?

Bump!
A member of the Rose family is as good as it gets from me I'm afraid. Any pertinent points for us to be looking at Faith?
I'm leaving my ID threads until later in the year. Bryophytes are my main field of interest.

Yes, certainly a member of the Rose family, so that's a good start. With numerous stamens like this, Roses and Buttercups are probably the first ports of call.
Acacma reckons she has seen it, but although I have seen this species many a time, I hadn't seen this variation on the theme before. I think I had better tell you, because she has got so close. It is indeed Water Avens, Geum rivale, but it is what is called 'flore pleno'. This means it has a lot more petals than usual. Wild Roses usually have five petals, of course. I guess the Rose family must be good at this trick, and that cultivated garden roses emerged when flore pleno versions of the wild roses happened to occur.
It's something rather fun to look out for, flore pleno versions of well-known flowers. White or pink versions of blue or purple flowers are another. Today I saw some common thistles in white, which I think someone has mentioned on this site before.
Bryophytes? Every winter I try to master a few, and then I forget them all again when the flowering plant season gets going! Must try harder. . . .

I found a similar Water Avens here in Edinburgh this June, as attached. It was very astonishing/delightful to see! Just spotted this forum was here, I used to enjoy the old WAB and its format very much - david 2015-06-13-07-58-10 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Interesting Faith, I've never come across it before. Cheers for the information and well done akacma, I for one would never have got it.
Indeed Faith I'm the total opposite. I'm just trying to get to grips with vascular plants, bryophytes seem far friendlier.

Vince But akacma didn't quite get it.The original plant isn't Water Avens, but is in a related genus!

That's very interesting David – the one I saw was in Ireland.
I don't quite understand what you mean about a related genus, aeshna?
While we are on the subject of Water Avens, another thing you might want to look out for is the hybrid between it and its close relative Wood Avens (aka Herb Bennet, Geum urbanum). When the two parents are growing near each other, you often see the hybrid or even a 'hybrid swarm' i.e. a range of intermediates from one end to the other.
Anyway, the credit goes to akacma, I think.

Sorry you confused me by your earlier comment of very warm. Can see what you meant now. Seems like we both confused each other here! Stig- I noticed that yesterday- don't think I quite match that somehow! Amused me anyway.

Very warm! (Where did you see it?) ....got chance to look at my photo file and assemble a reply at long last! I have found that I have 2 photos with approx locations , May 26 2010 in Bastow Wood near Grassington and also the Newbiggin end of Smardale Gill NNR on June 3 2011. I am sure I have seen some since then but appear not to have taken a photo. Sorry I can't be more specific.
