I must make a trip to the optician again - until I'd loaded this onto the computer I hadn't seen this hoverfly was egg-laying even though I took several pics I didn't capture the egg moment. Eristalis sp. I think?

Not E. tenax as back legs are not all black and no fat face stripe. Maybe an E. arbustorum.
I do like shots like this, not seen an egg laying hoverfly before 'in the field'.

I have been practicing my Eristalis species and reasonably sure E arbustorum (completely dusted face). Nice picture. Amazing the things the camera captures without us being aware until we look onscreen. Hurrah for digital photography. Remember all the photo-freaks who said it would never catch on!

Thank you all for the feedback - don't think I'll ever get to grips with hoverfly IDs but will just keep snapping anything that moves!
