Help needed with ID for this large fly. I think it is a hoverfly but I've made that mistake already. The body length is over one inch and it is feeding on mint blossoms. DSC_3159-s by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr DSC_3168-s by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

The lovely hoverfly Volucella zonaria, that mimics hornets.

Thanks anzu. I've spent 4 days staring at a bunch of mint waiting for those pictures and anyone not a member of this forum must think that I'm totally insane.

Saw my first of the year a few days ago on on the Fennel in my front garden- really impressive insect.Doesn't seem a good year for them here as I usually see quite a few of them.

Yeah I haven't had any this year yet, only had a handful last year but would've thought I'd have seen one by now.

Thanks anzu. I've spent 4 days staring at a bunch of mint waiting for those pictures and anyone not a member of this forum must think that I'm totally in sane. Luckily your with your kin here People think I'm insane when I stare at a spider on the wall at work, or pop into a container for a better look. Just 10 minutes again I was scooping a moth off the floor with someone spotting me haha.
