Hi all, Can't find much info so wondered if anyone would be able to help with this ID. It is either viciae or trifolii. I'm thinking the marking arrangements (with the middle two spots out of alignment along with the inner spot being much larger) suggests viciae but I'd appreciate comments. It was taken on Normandy at Cotentin, where both species probably occur. P1140318 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I don't think the arrangement of the spots has any bearing on the species. I've not seen NF 5-spot before, structurally this looks fine for your normal 5-spot though. NF 5-spot is also smaller (12-14mm), whereas 5-spot is 14-19mm. Yours looks more like the latter.

Hi Nige,
Interesting...only reason I mentioned that is because I searched up many pictures of both species, and it was a consistent difference I saw. You mention a structure difference? Is this related to the "rounded wing tips" Wikipedia was going on about? If that size difference was greater I might be able to use a ruler and try and guess the size based on my fingers.
The location apparently favours New Forest so I had it down as that for a while until I heard that trifolii can occur in wet meadows, which are not at the site but nearby.

Hmmmmm I'm not sure then! As I say NF 5spot isn't one I've seen. Size would be your best beet probably. To me that pic is a spitting image of this one: www.hantsmoths.org.uk/species/0171.phpNige
