Up to a few years ago there were water voles in the banks of our burn. Had a landslip and deluge and lost the banks of the burn and the water voles. My question is, if they can no longer use the banks would they move inland so to speak, maybe move their abodes to boggy land? I nearly trod on one today that was hiding in the grass near one of the bird feeders which is up slope from the boggy land (actually it is under water at the moment). I have lots of short tail/bank voles - small, coats brownish/pale brown, so am certain it was not one of those. This one was almost black a bit larger with short tail (not a rat). I was taken by surprise when I saw it.

Yes water voles are capable of moving location if an area is no longer suitable for them providing other suitable habitat is within reach (though i am not sure how far they are willing to travel) water voles can also be found quite high up in scotland and do tend to bigger than those in the south and often black
