Lucky you with all those sparrows. I only see that many down at the allotment. You must be doing something right, rowan!

I like the sparrows, so I do tend to cater for them a bit. I've found that they prefer any protected feeders- cages that give them a chance against the starlings. Their favourite is something called a 'squirrel-blocking cage', (Chapelwood, I think?) and I've wire a mesh dish in the bottom of it to hold suet pellets and mealworms. Their seed feeder is a caged one as well, (a lucky bargain off eBay!) also with a mesh dish in the bottom- they do seem to enjoy raking all the seed out and then picking through it later. I get straight grains from Brinvale- qibbled oats, rolled oats, and white and red millet... I found anything else like cracked corn or wheat is wasted on them. They do like their millet, thought- whenever the pet shop near me has some nice sprays in I always get a few to put in an extra-large fatball holder, and sparrows will pick them clean in just a day or so.
