Thanks aeshna - compared with a pic I took later in the season last year this one seems darker and the markings more distinct - probably last year's was rather worn or maybe my new camera is just better than the old one!

Agree with Small Dusty Wave.
First one might be Nut Bud Moth, Epinotia tenerana? Or one of the Eucosma tortrids? I always struggle with tortrids!

Thanks Nige - I've looked up your suggestion on UK Moths and Nut Bud Moth (Epinotia tenerana) certainly seems to fit the bill. We are also surrounded by alders which appear to be a major food source for this moth. Alf
