Thanks both.
A couple of days after I took the shot I was in the garden clearing some plants and another toad appeared. I had not thought about colour variation in toads before but garden one was grey with no hint of any of the colours of the first one.

For some reason we never get toads in the garden - plenty of frogs and newts, though.

Good you have frogs and newts.
At this time of the year we hear frogs more than see them, though it can be a weeks between one hearing and the next, and as the year moves on we are around in the garden much less at night.
The pond has had fewer newts in the last couple of years and we rarely see toads in the garden unless we move something and one shuffles out of the way.
