I'm recently back from cycling round France, Germany and Netherlands (mostly rural and camping) and in France and Germany I'd frequently see Red Squirrels running across the road or in trees, generally around. Didn't see a single grey. (In Netherlands didn't see any squirrels of any description).
I can't believe that mainland Europe hasn't had Grey Squirrels. What's confusing me is how in the UK the Greys seem to replace the population of reds (for a variety of reasons e.g. squirrel pox) but in Europe the Reds seem to be doing very well. What's the difference that's allowing the reds to do so well (and stop the greys).

It seems the main concentration of grey squirrels in continental Europe is in northern Italy and they do not seem to have spread elsewhere. As the greys were introduced in Italy in 1948 I'm surprised they have not spread to other areas of Europe by now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_grey_squirrels_in_EuropeDave
