We've just returned from a one-week holiday to Greece... it did feel very odd going abroad after such a long time.
The resort where we stayed (Kefalonia) was in an isolated spot, and I'm afraid I didn't get many good wildlife pics. Someone staying at the same hotel told me she'd seen bee-eaters, but even though I went out every day for a walk I was never fortunate enough to see them. Which was a shame, because if I was going to have a bird-bucket list, a bee-eater would definitely be on it.
I did get a not-very good photo of a martin sitting beneath roof over the outdoor dining area, and one of the elusive little lizards which were everywhere.
I'm not one for photographing spiders, but this one was too large too ignore- and with interesting colours like a dark bumble bee. It seemed to have its web on the ground in a ditch by the roadside.
The beetle was the most interesting. It was lying on its back right outside the door waving its legs in the air, and it did NOT appreciate me attempting to save it. I was able to get it to latch onto a stick and then moved it onto a plant, (it fell off the first succulent and headed towards the driveway, so I moved it again. That made it particularly cross.) I have never heard an insect make a noise like it did... sort of a hissing, very cranky whinging noise. Sorry there's nothing in the photo to give an idea of scale, but I think it was about 4 - 5cm in length.
I'm hoping someone can identify it, and also the spider.
