How many of you now, have Ringnecked parakeets in your garden or area. We have them but they are, not around all the time .

Here in our bit of east London we see them everyday both flying around and on the peanut feeder in the garden.
It was a few, but possibly as much as ten, years ago they first appeared. Just the odd one or two then but they have done very well since.

They are in the woods near us in north London, but only come into the garden now and again. I think because I have large rainhats on the feeders, they find them difficult to land on. I've noticed they land first on the chain or hook and then climb down onto the feeder, but a rainhat acts as a barrier. When I had some decent-sized sunflowers come up several summers ago, the parakeets really liked those once they'd gone to seed. They came every day for about a week. I've never seen them behave aggressively towards other birds while on the feeders, but they are very prompt to see off any grey squirrels.

In our garden the parakeets also do not bother other birds, though all the small birds fly away from the feeder when the parakeets, or other larger birds(eg great spotted woodpecker) arrive.
Who rules the feeder is about 50:50 between the parakeets and the GSW, but both give way to the squirrels.
