I discovered two days ago that a couple of wasps had decided building a nest in our summer house was a good idea. On the whole my attitude towards wasps that provided they leave me alone I'll do the same... but I didn't fancy being in such a small enclosed space with them, so unfortunately it had to go. My technique is to light three sticks of nag champa incense, leave a window open a crack and let them make their own way out. They were gone in the morning, so I prodded the nest down to discourage them from coming back. They are such wonderful pieces of engineering I hated to do it, but since they'd not made much of a start on it I'm sure they will be able to find new premises without too much trouble. 01 WaspNest Apr 2022 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr 02 WaspNest Apr 2022 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I used to get a new "golf ball" sized nest hanging under my shed roof most years. I assumed they were some sort of starter nest/bootstrap nest and they then moved on to start a bigger one elsewhere (no idea if they do that, just a complete guess as they got to golf all sized and then abandoned).
But one year came back from a couple of months cycle touring and there was a massive nest hanging there (under shed roof, at least 0m from house so no problem). Must have been over 12 " vertically. When wasps finished with it over winter I took it down and it was surprisingly heavy.

Had one in the garage the other year like you rowenberry I thought to leave it but it seemed to double in size every day and had to go I remember when I was a kid putting my foot over a wasp nest in the ground never thought they had more than one exit anyway after multiple stings and not being able to my my shoe on for a week a lesson well learnt and never forgotten. ian
