This afternoon I had a Herring Gull land in the garden and started eating birdseed from the ground feeder. I know a Herring Gull's diet is quite wide ranging but I have never seen one eat seed or vegetable matter. After about half a minute it wandered over to the pond and then flew off. The last time I had a Herring Gull landing in the garden was March 2017 and it had a feast of the frogs in the pond. Has anyone got any views on a Gull going vegetarian?

I haven't seen herring gulls eating bird seed but have seen them take peanuts. Although their diet might lean more towards the carnivorous, they are omnivores and opportunists (eg www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqy9hxhUxK0 ) with excellent eyesight so I think nothing is off limits. I can understand people not liking gulls if they have lost their food to them and in some areas where dustbins are not appropriate local councils have supplied residents with gull-proof bags, but I have a great liking for herring gulls.
