I had this Himalayan salt lamp for years, but last summer I noticed it was absorbing moisture and the electrical wires leading inside it were starting to go crusty with salt deposits. I pulled the wires out, removed the bulb and thought I'd try it with the sparrows... since they seemed to like salt, I thought they might make use of it.
It sat out in the back garden for most of the winter, and today was the first time I've actually seen any of them showing any interest in it. They still prefer the salt I sprinkle on the ground for them, but at least if I forget they have an alternative 'salt lick' now. While I was photographing the ones around the salt, I also realised a few were gathering nesting material as well, (but isn't this very early?) They weren't very serious about it- kept picking up bits of grass and dropping them, but they've started thinking about it.
