Hi all, i'm new to the forum. Look forward to increasing my knowledge on the natural world. Got a question. Over the last few years i have been planting native trees, shrubs & wildflowers. Got the usual suspects coming into bloom at the moment like snowdrops, primroses etc. To my amazement, the snakes head fritillaries are ready to flower??? I thought they were a late spring bloomer. I wondered if any of you guys have experienced them coming out at this early stage before?? My location is south west England. Thanks in advance.

Hello NB and welcome to WABI.
Snakes Heads ready to flower now is, I think, very early. We have some in the garden here in London and I have just had a look and there is no sign of them at all.

Most years I have 4 clumps of snowdrops (not far apart) and this years one clump is flowering and no sign of anything (not even leaves) from the other 3 clumps. All were left unclt through most of summer (i.e. they were allowed to completely die back and not mown over).
On wandering around lanes quite a lot of snowdrops but nothing like the numbers from previous years. Also, in verges some daffodil like leaver appearing to maybe 6" high (in areas around rural hamlets so likely planted bulbs).

Hello, and welcome to Wabi, Natureboy!
Things do seem to be quite a bit earlier than usual here in North London- quite a bit of lesser Celandine is up already, and the daffs have been showing for over a week now. No blooms as of yet, though.

I had another look at our Snakes Head Fritillaries this morning and one of them is just(less than 1cm) through the soil.
The snowdrops are just starting to flower and we have a few Pulminarias flowering too.
