I've been a keen cyclist for quite a few years and several years ago I remember following a Barn Owl down the road for a fair distance. In Norfolk a fair number of our lanes are narrow single track lined with trees/hedgerow often virtually forming a tunnel. Several years ago cycling along such a lane my presence disturbs a barn own who flew out and down the road a close ahead and up a bit and he seemed to stick to the road for ages, me following keeping same distance. Great and I remember it.
Recently just down the road I've been regularly doing similar with a Buzzard always in same place. What happens is my presence disturbs him and he flies out over the road between trees on both sides close ahead and above. But he is faster and pulls ahead, perches on a branch overhanging the road, and very soon I catch-up and he's off again slightly above and ahead, etc. but with him it's only maybe 0.25 miles (a few hops). But great experience.
When this happens the birds don't give any appearance of seeking escape (they could find a way out between trees or up above trees), just a bit disturbed so they move on (I do nothing to disturb them beyond being there moving and I don't tend to spot them until they fly out above road).
