Several parakeets dropped in to try out the peanut feeder this afternoon- we normally only get them when they start foraging in the autumn. The Greater Spotted woodpecker was NOT happy about this, since he considers that to be his personal territory. Fortunately they didn't stay long- despite being quite acrobatic, the rainhat on the feeder seems to confuse them. Whenever they try to land on it they just slide off. I'll try putting an apple out for the tomorrow and see how they get on with that instead... and it will keep Petey Pecker happy if it keeps them away from his peanuts! 01 Parakeet Nov 9 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr 02 Parakeet Nov 9 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Good shots. We have the same feeder(which is the only one that squirrels haven't destroyed). I'm surprised the parakeets can get anything from it - their beaks don't look to be the right shape - but somehow they manage it.
Whenever the parakeets and a great spotted woodpecker are in the garden together it is about 50:50 who rules the feeder.

We had a male Great-spotted Woodpecker on the hearts feeder this morning (previously I've only seen them on the peanut feeder) when a RN Parakeet landed to feed on the hearts but as it approached the woodpecker aggressively postured to the parakeet that backed off. Then a Magpie landed on top of the feeder pole & the woodpecker flew onto the birch & the Magpie flew off.
