Believe it or not, I found this lying on the pavement in our local high street yesterday... could it possibly be a buzzard feather? It was sunny and warm yesterday- maybe a bird lost it while riding a thermal overhead; I can't think how else it got there! It's 11.5cm long, (about 4 1/2 inches.) Yes Common Buzzard, this is a secondary, sixteen of which appear after the ten primary wing feathers. Incidentally, I’ve been collecting feathers since 1957, I think I may need a larger house; I probably see a dozen Common Buzzard feathers mostly wing each year but only collect those in good condition of which tail feathers are the most impressive in terms of pattern, see link. Nonetheless, I’m pleased you’ve given the length in inches since I always use fractions to measure feathers, fourteen inches = P6 is the longest I have. As a point of interest archery equipment bows, arrows, fletching’s – feathers are sold using imperial measurements too e.g., bow draw weigh in pounds and arrows by length and diameter 5/16 11/32 /23/64 /. As for the filthy lucre I print all my own call me old fashion, I jest of course just in case some jobs worth is reading this. Alan – A- Dale, Robin Hoods trusty Minstrel. A wandering minstrel I, a thing of shreds and patches of ballads, songs, and snatches, and dreamy lullaby! My catalogue is long, through every passion ranging and to your humours changing I tune my supple song. www.featherbase.info/it/species/buteo/buteo
