I was lucky to have spotted this dragonfly hovering around the pond late this afternoon... we've not seen any in the garden in over a year. I was hoping it might have deposited some eggs in the pond, although it didn't appear to be going near the water- it was landing on bricks and plants around the edges and it acted as though it was egg-laying... or is it doing something else? I hurried to get the camera before it flew away, so only got a few photos of its behaviour. It was a large one- I could hear it making a sound similar to a humming bird as it flew about. 01 Dragonfly Aug 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr 02 Dragonfly Aug 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

there is one doing exactly the same here, which was said to be a Southern Hawker - Aeshna cyanea

Hopefully there will be quite a few nymphs in the pond next year... they are stunning insects.

Hopefully there will be quite a few nymphs in the pond next year... they are stunning insects. They are one of my favourite dragonflies. The males in particular are very striking with their bright green spots & pale blue tail bands. They are also inquisitive creatures often flying close up to you.
