There's a rat that visits regularly to feed on the seed spill under the bird table. I have been trying to discourage it. So far it hasn't worked so I am thinking of more drastic methods as I do not want it so close to the home.
Yesterday evening was a surprise. A couple of Magpies came in for a drink. They spotted the rat and went immediately into attack mode. The rat tried to fend them of but they were much to fast for it. The to-ing and fro-ing went on for about 20 minutes or so. The Magpies seemed determined to get the rat. In the end rat gave up and fled. The Magpies then spent about 10 minutes patrolling the flower bed and base of the fence just in case it came back. Hopefully the rat will not return. Though, I suspect it will in time.
Anyway, Hats off to the Magpies.
Harold.

Great observation, Harold.
There is not much gets past magpies(or crows). I haven't seen them drive a rat away but have seen two making life uncomfortable for a cat. They worked well together, one having a go as the cat tried to attack the other one. Eventually the cat just moved away. They are also wonderfully vocal sometimes when they spot a predator.

Thanks Rowanberry. Unfortunately my resident fox is more interested in lazing about. Spends a lot of time sleeping on top of the grass compost bin. Its nice and warm.
