Every now and again the jays take it upon themselves to give the sparrows a hard time. They come swooping in, wings fully extended in 'sprawk' mode and the sparrows scatter screaming as though a BoP has just entered the garden. The jay then sits surveying all the panicked birds as though it's just played a prank on them all... and looking very pleased with itself. If ever a bird could smirk, a jay can do it. I have seen a jay raid a nest, but it's only taken a newly hatched chick- not a fully fledged young bird. Maybe they are simply attention-seeking, and have learned that this behaviour causes me to come out and give them more monkey nuts so that they stop acting like hooligans? If that's the case, they are smarter than I realised, (and probably smarter than I thought I was!) 01 Jay and Sparrows July 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr 02 Jay and Sparrows July 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I saw a Jay once take a fully fledged House Sparrow & have seen them take a couple of Blue Tit fledglings. Like the photo showing the Jay with the sparrows.
