Now it it just me or are there a lot of wasps about early this year? I'm seeing quite a few in the back garden and not all are queens, there's also lots of other buzzing insects around with multiple types of bees it's really quite nice to sit in the sun and listen to the birds and bug singing away. Whilst enjoying my mid morning coffee and cake ian

I haven't seen any wasps about yet but definitely plenty of bees and small flies dancing in columns in the sunlight.

Are they wasps Ian? At the moment I'm seeing quite a few Nomada spp cuckoo bees which can look very wasp-like if you don't know what they are.

My house is made of wood weatherboard which seems popular with wasps overwinter. And in spring some end up "emerging" into the house rather than into the great outdoors so I end-up with sleeps slow wasps normally crawling across the floor or seats. Had a couple so far this year (last one a couple of days ago).

Thanks aeshna5 undoubtedly some are queens but the others are wasp sized so I looked at a few pictures of Nomada spp and the do look a lot like wasps don't they
It's a bit of a task to get one to sit still long enough for a photo but I'll keep trying ian

It's a bit of a task to get one to sit still long enough for a photo but I'll keep trying ian They do always seem to be on the move! I thought it was worth flagging up this possibility as I wouldn't expect many worker social wasps this soon, though no doubt some queens looking for somewhere to nest. It would be good to see what you do have.
