I know it is a bit stupid to ask others to try and identify a bird only you saw, but I hope someone can give an insight.
I was sitting in the back garden about 11:30 this morning and spotted a bird sitting on the edge of the roof of a next door neighbour so the view was against a bright clear blue sky.
It was facing me but I could not see any of the tail and I thought, because the breast looked paler than what I could see of the wings, and a bit speckled, it was a mistle thrush.
I did not have any binoculars but I thought it odd I could not see any thrush like beak.
The bird then took of and as it dropped between the houses the wings looked grey and pointed and in the brief view I had of it flying it look like a bird of prey.
Not far from the house is a wooded area and an area of scrubby grassland.
All views welcomed.
Dave

Could it have been a male Sparrowhawk? One or 2 Hobbies are just beginning to get reported but not many yet. We'll never know for sure-always frustrating when one doesn't get a good enough view.

Thanks for the replies. Thanks Aeshna for the info on hobby arrivals. I think you are correct about a male sparrowhawk. I don't know why I did not think of it. We have seen more sparrowhawk around lately and seeing the more common is going to be more likely than the rare.
Thanks
Dave
