We saw this one singing it heart out it the top of a very tall tree this morning in the playing-fields nearby. (so not a great angle for a photo- straight up, and zoomed in.) We were thinking chiffchaff, but I don't think the song was right... it was more melodic and warbling, like a robin. Bird for ID April 22 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Your song description immediately rules out it being a Chiffchaff. Willow Warbler looks very similar but has a different song.
Not the greatest photo but I'm pretty sure it's a male Blackcap, which seem to be everywhere now, & the song description sounds good for this.

I'm no expert but before I saw Aeshna's reply I thought Blackcap.
A great bird to have nearby.

I never even thought blackcap... and of course at that angle his cap wouldn't have been visible.
They are great little birds; I was sorry not to have seen one in the garden over the winter. I'll listen out for him whenever we go past that tree now.
