Why aren't we doing this here?

Other uses of waste plastics Couldn't really be done in UK because UK "doesn't do cycle paths" (which is another bee in my bonet about UK and sustainability and it's lack of investment into cycling, walking, etc.)

Apart from us generally not doing cycle paths we, who were once 'top nation' now always seem to be behind the curve in more eco-friendly initiatives.
More than 10 years ago when visiting the Netherlands we saw machines in supermarkets(even quite small local ones) that accepted drinks can, crushed them, weighed them and then produced a voucher that could be used to get money off the shopping. Do we have anything similar here?
I think the government, and those of any other industrialised countries, should embarrassed if they aren't turning plastic into bricks when a country which would generally be considered to be a third world country is able to do so.

There was a thing on the news the other day recycling PPE and turning it into plastic ingots for making chairs etc. We have cycle paths around here I walk an old rail line regularly, goes for miles and one of the local manor house estates has been adding cycle paths through it's land with plans for more. 'free to access' Also in our local Sainsburys there's a machine to recycle stuff and it hands out vouchers. Never the less more should be done and more NO ALL our waste should be processed here in the UK and not shipped out ian

Good to hear you have a supermarket that does a bit for reducing landfill. Agree about our waste not going abroad - that is appalling.

The reports about our 'recycling' being shipped to Turkey and then dumped by the roadsides really is discouraging... and I try SO HARD to reuse, upcycle and recycle... for governments to just make a mockery out of all our effort.
My cousin sent me a video about a company in Canada where they collect the thousands of disposable wooden chopsticks thrown away every day; they sort, compress, soak, and then glue them into big slabs before shaping them into shelves, tabletops and counters. It just to show how much can be done if someone puts some thought into finding a solution.
