I found this yesterday evening in our shed- not seen one of these before, any ideas? The photo was taken under artificial light, so the colours probably aren't accurate. It was about 1.5cm long. Insect Feb 2021 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

It's one of the true bugs in the Lygaeidae ( the ground bugs). I'm pretty sure it's Rhyparochromus vulgaris, which is a relatively recent arrival here, first recorded in the London area about 10 years ago. They overwinter as adults. There's a good site called British Bugs where you can see some images of it & some basic info. Not one I've seen yet.

Thanks, Aeshna! I'm glad I snapped it now- I very nearly didn't, but because I've not seen many insects yet this year I thought I'd ask for an id.
