The photo is a small bit of wall in the garden. All of the holes marked by the arrows are used by at least one wood mouse(Apodemus sylvaticus), one field vole(Microtus agrestis) - I feel fairly confident in those identifications - and one shrew. I have seen the shrew much less frequently than the other two and don't know if it is a common or pygmy shrew.
Is it common for different species to use the same burrows or are they more likely using the same entrance to different burrows?

in my imagination they have a whole world of tunnels behind the steps
