I cut the grass yesterday and one area had loads of ant nests, maybe a couple of meters apart. Rest had virtually no nests. Out for a walk today (agricultural fields) and saw no ant nests.
What sort of conditions might be attracting the ants to the one area of my garden (it's a large garden so that area is a lot of ant nests, guessing 15-20). Or is it the proximity to other nests? (I thought they fought each other - from memory). There is no real food source nearby other than grass. Orchard area is a fair distance (for an ant - 40m), hedgerow 30m.
I noticed then as the lawn mower got stuck on the raised "mounds" (not obvious until the mower catches).
They seem deserted now but earlier in the year such mounds were black ants (Lasius niger ?).

Sorry you didn't have a reply to this, Ian- I somehow missed seeing it.
I've wondered before what attracts them to build in certain areas- sometimes I'll discover them in particular flower pots, or even under the pots when I go to move them. It could be the type of soil- I think it needs to be well-drained and maybe a bit sandy so it's easier for them to tunnel into, but I couldn't say for certain. I only know they colonised particular pots this year, and those did seem to have a good supply of aphids. Maybe that was the attraction for them.
